• A frequent grumble with LD T244s is that they have an irritating wheel wobble at speeds in the region of 46-52mph; by sod's law, just the speed that makes for pleasant cruising on trunk roads.

There is much speculation as to the cause but certainly it's the case that the standard (very heavy) wheels and tyres are in no way balanced.

A full description of the wobble phenomenon will appear on the main pages of the website soon but suffice to say, for now, I'm not personally convinced that balancing is the major issue. In any event, it makes sense to eliminate this as a possible factor.

I've previously been to a local commercial vehicle tyre shop who have a static balancer and though they were able to get a wheel on the rig and determine the correction required (a lot), they could not source weights with a suitably large knock-on collar that would fit the huge thickness of the standard wheel rim lip. Stick-on weights were not an option either as the number required would have been impossible to fit in the space available between rim and brake drum.

To cut a long story short, I had previously rejected any dynamic balancing solution as there are many conflicting reports on effectiveness out on the world wide web. It seems though that potential solutions are not that abundant so I'm about to try Dyna-Beads.

More long days spent jacking, muscling, sweating and finishing the painting job I started just before winter have just about seen all the wheels, suitably 'beaded' re-attached to the truck.

    Watch this space...

Tweaks and fixes are an ongoing part of the project. This series of pages form a blog - of sorts - and is intended to give a flavour of the day-to-day realities of living with the truck as issues crop up and tweaks and fixes progress. Many of the posts eventually end up getting written up properly and included in the main body of the Trip Truck site; so if you think you have read any of the older posts somewhere else, you almost certainly have.
