• So far during ownership I've occasionally drained a bit of diesel out of the standard sedimenter bowl (as is recommended practice) and have been pleased that there's been no sign of water or debris. It turns out there's a good reason for that. The sedimenter bowl has been bypassed, presumably by army mechanics, meaning the feed from my fuel tank is plumbed straight into the lift pump. The plumbing for the sedimenter bowl had been left open, but tucked away neatly in with other pipes and and conduit so I had no idea it was out of commission. The diesel I had been draining was just what was left in the bowl and was years old.

I was alerted to this possibility by another DAF owner that had found his bowl had been bypassed and a few more queries reveal it's quite a common thing to find.

The reason became obvious when I recommissioned the bowl over the weekend. With the sedimenter plumbed in, the fuel delivery system stubbornly refuses to work. I'm so far baffled as to why but am suspecting that air is somehow being sucked into the delivery system from the bowl or its fittings.

Here's a pic of the offending bowl just before removal which, apart from sussing out the fault, needs a cosmetic refurb anyway. They are aluminium and the NATO green paint used to paint absolutely everything at the factory is shelling off horribly.

I have a sense this saga will run on a bit...

Tweaks and fixes are an ongoing part of the project. This series of pages form a blog - of sorts - and is intended to give a flavour of the day-to-day realities of living with the truck as issues crop up and tweaks and fixes progress. Many of the posts eventually end up getting written up properly and included in the main body of the Trip Truck site; so if you think you have read any of the older posts somewhere else, you almost certainly have.
