Harwich: the port seems like a fixture for us these days. We decided to sail overnight to the Hook of Holland this time as the 12 or so hours it'll save will mean we can spend the first few days of this trip at an altogether more relaxed pace. We were so impressed by the Netherlands last year that we don't just want to blast through.

The timing of the sailing meant we were more or less hitting bed as soon as we boarded the ship. We did have time to have a look through the available channels on the TV in our cabin though and found that one channel had a rotation of about eight CCTV cameras focussed on the pet kennels on board.

Fair to say Emma became obsessed with the kennels' occupants and spent far too long watching how the various imprisoned dogs were dealing with their strange new world.

It went on for a very long time. Their lack of distress was roughly proportional to her concern: they were all pretty obviously coping better than Emma.
