Northern Isles Trip - Day 2 - Scotland

Blogging at 21:00 on Sunday 31st March from intended overnighting spot N 57.40275°, W 04.06499° / http://maps.google.com/maps?q=loc:57.40275%2C-04.06499

Another day of covering ground whilst dodging swarms of tediously obvious social media vans.

It's been good, though. The weather's been fair, following what seems like six months of unending rain; and it's even been fairly mild, too. As always, the Highland scenery has been simply staggering, especially as it's been bathed in spring sunshine. Many of the higher peaks are currently covered in snow and the whole sun-dappled vista has resulted in plenty of feel-good.

We made an effort to savour the early (this far north) spring warmth by eking out a less-than-obvious map feature and then having a very long lunch stop at said map feature, which turned out to be a cracking little riverside spot surrounded by semi-natural deciduous woodland copiously draped in lichens. Bird life here was excellent, with all manner of woodland species incessantly foraging for food and nesting material.

A couple of hours driving after quitting this idyll saw us foraging for a similar less-than-obvious map feature in order to hopefully overnight social-media-van-free. We are, as a result, currently hunkered at the coordinates shown and thankfully (so far) it's proving spot on.

We both did a run from here (pic) and it's been blissfully quiet and untrammeled. Come night time, the few remaining wispy clouds obligingly fizzled away leaving a strikingly clear and star filled sky. It feels like it's going to drop cold.
