Moldova Trip - Day 29 - Poland

There was nothing on the trail cam last night, unless you count two older chaps in full cammo gear carrying wicker baskets and foraging for forest fruits at the crack of dawn.

It's been a funny old drive today as we've basically skirted the Czechia - Poland border all day and also crossed it with some regularity. Interestingly (or perhaps not) the observations made over the past few days have pretty consistently been borne out. Poland has tended to be quite urbanised, intense, and heavily trafficked (sometimes manically); whilst Czechia has tended to feel altogether more bucolic, way less trafficked and much less hurried.

Lunch was a bit of an odd one, too. It was a combination of actual lunch (no surprises, there), riding and maintaining bikes, and helping out with a faulty phone line back home.

Emma was able to book an OpenReach engineer on an entirely automated online system thanks in no small part to the excellent foreign cell networks we've had access to, and to our current SIM provider: SMARTY.

Highly unusually for a British company these days, we've had literally nothing but excellent, intuitive, and totally transparent service from SMARTY, and their rolling-monthly tariffs are incredibly well priced. Roaming in the EU is still absolutely free and even their add-ons - which we needed for Moldova and Ukraine - were as cheap as chips. We can't recommend the company highly enough.

In terms of cell networks, even in the darkest corners of the countries we've visited we've rarely encountered any black spots and have consistently had 4G or 5G data on tap.

Anyhow, back to the trip. More border skirting followed lunch and we eventually called it a day on the Polish side of the political divide (coordinates). En route here we spotted red squirrel and also (sadly) a roadkill black morph of the same species, plus a roadkill beech marten.

The stopover spot is up forest track and the habitat is quite open and extremely lynx friendly (pic). A bit of research also indicates lynx populations around here are known. We've scanned with bins and the thermal imager and though we've had no apex predator sightings yet, we have spotted crossbills, a sparrowhawk, fallow deer and black woodpecker.

It's over to the trail cam, now...
