We've found it difficult to leave the Landmannalauger area, such is the primaeval appeal.

We decided to investigate an unmarked-on-our-map trail that led to our current location where we hope to kip. For miles in every direction is astonishing beauty.

It was hard-won mind, the track to where we are was incredibly steep and deeply carved with huge holes. Once committed to 3rd gear in the low ratio box there was no option but to keep my foot in. Losing impetus would have been been a difficult situation to recover. With the benefit of hindsight 2nd in low ratio would have been slightly less arduous. The truck didn't seem to mind much but we were well and truly along for the ride.

Totally worth it though, baby Jesus smiled upon our arrival with the reward of a rainbow over the unfeasibly beautiful red, black and green 'cliffs' of a caldera, in which is nestled a crystal clear lake.

Neither words nor our pics can do this place justice.
